Alberta's Prohibition History
In June of 1915, the Alberta government approved the "Liquor Act", which lead to the implementation of prohibition on July 1, 1916, banning the sale of all alcohol across the province. The ban stayed in place until 1923, when a repeal allowed the sale of alcohol, but under strict and limiting guidelines which remained in effect until 1965.
During Canadian Prohibition, Alberta had its own share of speakeasies, which we're secret bars and establishments that served alcohol despite the ban. During this time, Alberta was a hotbed for bootlegging and illicit distilleries, with hidden bars catering to oil workers and cowboys. These places we're often disguised as ordinary businesses and required secret passwords or knocks for entry.
Even though prohibition has long since ended in Alberta, until recently there were still strict limitations on distilling in the province. In 2013, the Alberta Government repealed a liquor law that prohibited small-scale distilling (less than 500,000L/year), which gave way to the start of the the Alberta craft distillery boom.
Fast forward to today, there are over 70 craft distilleries operating in Alberta, some of which are winning international awards, and the industry continues to grow as consumers are seeking higher quality products and enjoy supporting local.
With Alberta's history is still being written, we can be thankful for the pioneers of this industry and tip our hats to the hard working men & women who are still at it today.
